Listen to the Word
Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all." (Mark 10:42-44)

There's a great phrase in the middle of Jesus' words about greatness: "not so with you." Jesus describes how most of the world goes about clamoring for greatness, and then he makes it clear that things should be different for his followers. We can hear Jesus saying, "Not so with you. Don't try to be a big shot like they do. Don't try to amaze others with your authority like they do. Don't make a show of your status like they do. Don't follow them down the wrong path to greatness. Instead, take the path of service."

When we find ourselves tempted to follow blindly after a crowd headed in the wrong direction, we need to hear Jesus' words reverberating in our minds: not so with you.

Live the Word
What is something you do simply because everybody else does it? Lift that to Christ, and ask him if there is a better way.
