Listen to the Word
Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all." (Mark 10:42-44)

Notice that Jesus doesn't say that if we serve, we will be great. Not exactly. He says that if we serve, we will BECOME great. He is talking about transformation. It is not that if we serve someone, Jesus will move us from the regular list to the great list. It is that if we serve consistently, that service changes who we are. We actually become great people.

Service is one of God's primary tools for shaping us into people whose character is great. Serving others helps us to develop humility. It weeds out selfishness and snobbishness and laziness. It helps us to drop the illusion that life is all about us and that everybody else is just a supporting character.

Do you want to become great? Serve. God will use that service to form you. He will use it to shape you into a great person.

Live the Word
The next time you have the opportunity to do a menial task, do it. Ask God to use it to shape you to be more like Christ.
