Listen to the Word

“Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death… Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.”  (Proverbs 11:4, 28)

I received a statement of my retirement account the other day, and I noticed the label at the top: “personal security program.” Apparently, the purpose of my retirement plan is to provide security. But perhaps you have noticed that money does not actually provide security in any ultimate sense. Money is a useful tool, but its usefulness is limited. It can’t shield you from cancer or guarantee that your kids make wise decisions or deliver you from death. Our Scripture states it in terms of a clear-cut guarantee: those who trust in riches will fall. You can count on the fact that you can’t count on your money.

Live the Word

Each time you handle money today, look for the “in God we trust” motto. Ask God to help you to count on him for your future, and not on money or anything else you can manage.
