Listen to the Word

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1 John 4:7-8 NAS)

You don’t have to be a brilliant Bible scholar to figure out the theme of this week’s Scripture: love. John is not very subtle about it. He uses a form of the Greek word agape six times in these two brief verses.

Agape is the characteristic word of Christianity. It describes God’s attitude toward us, and the attitude he expects us to have toward each other. Agape is love that is not drawn out by the worthiness of the object loved. Agape does not say “I love you because…” or “I love you if…” It is an irrevocable act of the will. It is sacrificial, self-giving, unmerited, unconditional love.

Live the Word

Ask God to help you love like he does this week - with no strings attached.
