Listen to the Word
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
Jesus commands us to baptize people in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This command is obeyed in sanctuary baptisteries, and in streams or swimming pools. Water baptism is a beautiful picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, as well as a visual reminder of the transformation he brings to those who follow him: the old us is buried, and we rise to live a brand new life with him.
But in the great commission, Jesus has more in mind than simply getting people wet. The Greek word translated “baptize” literally means to immerse. Jesus commands us to immerse people in the name of our triune God. He wants us to help folks to be submerged up to their eyeballs in the reality of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He wants us to invite folks to dive into the deep end of the love of God.
Live the Word
As often as possible today, reflect on the image of being immersed in God. Tell him you want to do more than just dip your toes in with him.
