Listen to the Word
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Luke 4:18-19)
This season of flags and fireworks is a great time to remember that freedom is Jesus’ specialty. He is the bondage breaker. He is the shackle smasher. We will look at several Scriptures this week that focus on the freedom found in Christ.
Luke tells us that Jesus chose a passage from Isaiah as the text for his very first sermon. The passage speaks of someone sent to announce freedom to captives and to set the oppressed free. The sermon he preached from the passage was only one sentence long: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus announced that he was the great emancipator, the long-awaited giver of liberty. Jesus is the one sent by God to set us free!
Live the Word
Tell Jesus “thank you” for coming to bring freedom, and ask him to liberate you from anything holding you in bondage.
