Listen to the Word

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)

This week we will allow God to challenge us regarding the way we use words. Today’s verse calls us to use words sparingly.

Perhaps you love to talk. You may have noticed that continually running your mouth can be dangerous. According to our Proverb, where lips are flapping, sin is happening. If you want to find sin, just look where lots of words are. The more you talk, the more likely you are to boast, or gossip, or lie, or annoy, or complain. If you have nothing good to say, you are much better off saying nothing. It is wise to hold your tongue rather than turning it loose.

Live the Word

Make arrangements to set aside at least fifteen minutes of silence today. During that time, seek not to speak at all. Let God use that exercise to teach you about the way you tend to use your words.
