Listen to the Word

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11)

Familiar Old Testament passages such as Psalm 23 remind us that God relates to us as a shepherd to his sheep. In the New Testament, Jesus boldly claims the title of shepherd for himself. He wants us to know that he will guide us, protect us, and provide for us, like a shepherd caring for his sheep. He wants us to realize that he knows all of his sheep by name, and he wants us to be able to recognize his voice. Jesus is our shepherd.

But he is no ordinary shepherd. In a massive understatement, Jesus calls himself the GOOD shepherd. He is so good, and he loves us so much, he is willing to lay down his life for us. Like a shepherd sacrificing himself to protect his lambs from a predator, Jesus gave himself on the cross so that we could live. Your shepherd loves you so much that he died for you.

Live the Word

When was the last time you thanked Jesus for laying down his life for you? Even if it was five minutes ago, it has been too long! Tell him thanks again.
