Listen to the Word

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

Jesus has the audacity to claim that everything in life hinges on whether or not we remain connected to him.

He says he is the vine, and we are the branches. If we stay connected to him, then spiritual nourishment automatically flows from him through that connection, and we automatically bear fruit. Fruit is the natural byproduct of staying connected to a healthy vine. On the other hand, if we sever our connection with him, we will be as useless as a dried-up stick on the ground. Fruit will be impossible for us - we will be able to do nothing.

Living a fruitful life is not a do-it-yourself project. If you want to do anything - if you want to bear fruit - you must stay connected to Jesus the vine.
