Listen to the Word
Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” (Exodus 3:13-14)

Moses makes an excuse you have probably tried before: “I don’t know God well enough. I can’t really serve until I have all the answers.” As we see time and again in the encounter at the burning bush, Moses’ offers an excuse focused on the weakness of Moses, and God offers a response focused on the strength of God. He tells Moses his name - sort of! He says “I AM WHO I AM!”

It is a response that says two things to Moses. First, by sharing the name, God makes it clear that Moses doesn’t have to worry about not knowing enough about God, because God is willing to make himself known. Second, God hints that Moses will never have God all figured out, even if he waits 100 years. He is beyond our comprehension. He simply is who he is.
