Listen to the Word

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” (Matthew 8:26)

Jesus was regularly baffled by the fear he saw in his disciples. He knew that a high mark on the fear meter always accompanied a low mark on the faith meter. He wanted his followers to trust him so much that they realized they never had to fear.

The fear of the disciples in Matthew 8 seems reasonable to us. After all, they had just endured a near-death experience at the hands of a tempest that tried to turn their boat into kindling. But Jesus wanted them (and us) to know that even the fiercest storm is under his control. Wind and waves are no match for him. No matter how rough things get, we never need to panic.

Live the Word

Ponder these questions for a moment: What do you fear? And what does that fear reveal about the level of your confidence in Christ?
