Listen to the Word

Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?" (Luke 20:17)

In today’s Scripture, Jesus quotes a line from Psalm 118:22 and applies it to himself. The verse tells us two important things about him. First, Jesus was rejected. That was true in the first century, and it is still true today. Jesus has always been ignored or spurned by many of the very people he came to save. Like a sick person spitting out the pill that would bring healing, many have refused the help Jesus came to give. Second, Jesus is the cornerstone. He is the center of everything God is building. He is the only solid foundation on which a life can be constructed.

There are two starkly contrasting responses to Jesus that are available to us: we can reject him, or we can build our lives on him. We can turn away from him and act like he doesn’t matter, or we can base everything we do on trusting him and obeying him.

Live the Word

What is the next task before you today? What would it look like to keep Jesus central as you approach that task? Ask him to be the foundation of your life as you tackle that next responsibility.
