Listen to the Word
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34)
We know some of the things that are coming tomorrow, and we are worried about those things. Other parts of tomorrow are a mystery, and the uncertainty we feel over that mystery also leads to anxiety. We are worried about what will happen, and we are worried about what might happen. Jesus makes it clear that worrying about tomorrow is completely unproductive. It will not make tomorrow’s load any lighter if you start carrying it today. It will just reduce the amount of strength you have available to handle today’s challenges.
Imagine a bridge. Over its lifetime, that bridge can support the weight of millions of vehicles. But it can’t support all of those vehicles at once – it would collapse. Likewise, you were built to receive life one day at a time. With God’s help, you have the structural strength to handle the weight that will come to you this day. You may not have the strength to handle today’s load while simultaneously taking the load of tomorrow and every future day onto yourself. Worry about tomorrow tomorrow. Just deal with today’s troubles today.
Live the Word
Ask God to help you put your full energy into what is before you today, not wasting any of it worrying about tomorrow.
