Listen to the Word

And so you will bear testimony to me.  But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.  For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.   (Luke 21:13-15)

The words in today’s Scripture are part of a larger section full of warnings for Jesus’ followers. The countdown to the cross is nearing zero, and Jesus wants them to realize that their connection to him is going to get them in trouble. He paints a bleak picture that includes persecution, arrest, betrayal by family and friends, hatred by the masses, and maybe even death. In the middle of the grim news is a ridiculous sounding command: “Make up your mind not to worry.” Jesus basically says, “Hey, you are about to be abused, locked up, beaten up, turned on, and attacked – but don’t worry about it!!” Then he shares a powerful promise that demonstrates why worry is unnecessary: Jesus himself will be with them in the fire, and he will make sure they have all the words and wisdom they need to respond to the mistreatment.

Jesus wants you to know that you won’t have to rely on your own smarts and savvy when people are out to get you. He will be there to tell you what you need to know and what you need to say.

Live the Word

Ask Jesus to come through on his promise to you today. Tell him that when you are in a difficult spot, you’ll be counting on him to give you the right words and wisdom.
