What If?

What if we truly believed this stuff is true?

What if we believed that God created the world, has infinite wisdom, power, and love, and that He knows how life works best?

What if we believed that we humans are the crown of creation, created to live in right relationship with God and to be His representative rulers on earth?

What if we believed that ALL humans are of the highest value, bearers of the Image of God, and though Sin causes brokenness in various areas of our lives, His love overwhelms our sin?

What if we believed that faith in Christ really is the only way to a right relationship with God?
What would our lives look like? If we behave consistently with what we believe to be true or right, do our lifestyles and choices support our claim to belief in these things?

I’m convinced that our 21st century American-style Christianity has us locked into a cultural and even political Christianity that is more about claiming a tribe than it is about living out faith in our every day lives. We say the right things, we avoid the wrong things, we adhere to the rituals, we buy the right t-shirts and listen to the right music, but when it comes down to it, the real question should be, “How does my life give evidence of what I believe?”

This week our church is living out its claim to care for our community. First Serve Sunday is evidence that we are for the good and well-being of our city as we get our hands dirty instead of sitting in our comfy air-conditioned sanctuary. Our student ministry will take part in that and plan an additional project of our own to put into practice the idea that the church is not a political institution that exists to exert God’s Will over unwilling citizens of the US, but a theological institution that exists to bring God’s light into communities that desperately need Him.

If we truly believe the message of the Gospel, how do our lives put that belief on display? What would we need to change to align our lives more fully to what we say we believe?
