Listen to the Word

But I tell you the truth, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.    (John 16:7-8)

The dashboard of your car has warning lights that will alert you that problems are approaching – you are running low on fuel, or your tire pressure is getting low, or the temperature of the engine is rising. The lights notify you that some type of corrective action is necessary.

The Holy Spirit plays a similar role in our lives. He warns us that things are not right. He alerts us to the problem of our sin. When people are trying to make life work without God, it is the Holy Spirit who makes them aware of their need for him. Once we connect with God, the Spirit nudges and pricks us each time we begin to drift off the path he has for us. A big part of growing in faith is learning to pay attention to the Spirit’s warning lights, to heed his conviction and make the necessary corrections.

Live the Word

Ask God to make you sensitive to his Spirit’s convicting work today, so that each time one of his warning lights comes on you are quick to respond.
