Listen to the Word

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. (Matthew 6:1)

Why do you do the good things that you do? Why do you pray and give and serve and worship? What is the motive behind your ministry? What audience is in your mind when you do spiritual things?

Jesus warns us of the danger of spiritual showoff syndrome. We often do right things for entirely wrong reasons. We seek applause from other people. Instead of doing good things for God’s delight and glory, we do them so others will be impressed with us.

Discipleship should be a reality, not a performance. Jesus calls you to live for an audience of One.

Live the Word

As often as possible this week, do kind things for others in secret. Seek not to receive credit for those kind actions.
