Listen to the Word

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  (Philippians 2:5-7)

Our Scripture celebrates the reason for the season: Jesus humbled himself and came to us. It is surprising enough to know that Christ came; it is absolutely shocking to know HOW he came.

If God were going to enter the world, you would expect him to do it in style. Maybe he would descend on a cloud with music playing, parades on every street, and coverage on all the networks. Maybe he would be 500 feet tall so nobody could miss him. But that is not how God showed up. He was born as a tiny baby! He was born to an unmarried peasant teenager! He was born in a stinking barn in the middle of nowhere! He made himself nothing for us!
