Listen to the Word

Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.   (Matthew 17:20)

Did you notice how much faith Jesus says we need? “Faith as small as a mustard seed.” If you haven’t seen a mustard seed lately, picture a poppyseed from your morning bagel. It’s a tiny thing. That’s not a whole lot of faith.

We would figure that extra large faith would be required to see a mountain move – maybe faith the size of a Winnebago. But Jesus makes it clear that the issue is not how much faith we have – the issue is where we put it. It’s not about the size of our faith, but about the size of the object of our faith. With little bitty faith in a big ol’ God, we can see a mountain do some commuting. God is the one who does the mountain moving. When we rely on him even a little, there is no limit to what he can accomplish in us and through us.
