Listen to the Word
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

Jesus makes an obvious point in the Sermon on the Mount: light gets noticed. It is as impossible to hide as a city on a high hill. Everybody sees it. Light is so different from darkness that you can’t miss it. And when you shine for Christ, you will stand out. You won’t have to call attention to yourself, or wear a t-shirt that says, “Notice me! I’m shining!” It will be impossible to miss. If you live with humility in a world of self-promotion, people will notice. If you live generously in the midst of the selfishness that surrounds you, you will stand out. When you are kind to people who treat you like dirt, the contrast is obvious. Light naturally stands out in a dark world.

Live the Word
Is there a situation in which you are tempted to hide your light and keep your commitment to Christ a secret? Confess that to God and ask him to help you shine without fear.
