Listen to the Word

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.    (Romans 8:26)

I’m sure you have had moments when you weren’t sure what to pray for – the situation about which you were praying was so complex that you couldn’t figure out what to ask for. You have probably even had moments when you felt like you couldn’t pray – that your faith was too small, or your pain too great, for prayer to be possible. Sometimes wordless groans are the best we can do.

Today’s verse gives us good news: when we are clueless and helpless about prayer, the Holy Spirit does our praying for us. He intercedes on our behalf. He pleads our case for us. Sometimes our prayers may be nothing more than a mess of words, but the Spirit takes those shabby prayers, sorts them out, and arranges them into just the right thing to say to God.

Live the Word

Tell the Holy Spirit what is troubling you most right now, and ask him to lift it to the Father on your behalf as he sees fit.
