Listen to the Word

Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.  (Ephesians 4:13)

We tend to assume that all that is really necessary in the Christian life is that we pray a prayer to nail down our reservation in heaven. In our typical theology, what happens between then and the day we die doesn’t really matter that much. If we grow, that is nice, but if not, it is no big deal. We embrace what could be called a fire insurance gospel.

But God not only wants you to trust him for the sweet by and by – he wants you to experience the joy of leaning on him in the here and now. Yes, he wants to give you a ticket to heaven – but he also wants to help you grow to become the kind of person who will be at home there when you get there. He wants you to grow to spiritual maturity.
